Clapham Townhouse

Located between Wandsworth and Clapham Common, the existing home presented an out-of-date layout with a poor connection to the garden. Our proposal was conceived as a ‘sanctuary in the city’ deliberately framing views towards the garden to imbue a sense of calm and tranquillity. We introduced a stepped rear extension to form an open-plan kitchen and dining layout suitable for modern living. The kitchen features a bespoke oak kitchen with a generous rooflight overhead to encourage natural daylight to fill the space.

Internally the material palette is paired back and expressed with a polished concrete floor, Clayworks plaster walls and oak joinery. The concrete floor flows outside and leads to the garden to create a seamless transition. Externally, the stepped extension is made from hand-made Petersen brick and finished with a concrete band to form the parapet. The landscaping is characterised by two planters that flank the garden and are home to wild grasses, flowers and perennials.
